Pollution Prevention and Control

In Late July 2006 the Environment Agency formally granted a PPC permit for the incinerator, pending final comments. They are inviting comments until 22 August 2006.

On 14 July 2006, Chairman Chris Chatwin wrote a response to Veolia’s response to the Environment Agency’s first schedule (4) notice to Veolia (ONYX).

On 3 April 2006, DOVE met with the Environment Agency in Worthing. The minutes of the meeting are available. Pay close attention to paragraph 24, where radioactive waste is discussed. There is a very real possibility that radioactive waste would be burnt were the incinerator to be built.

Background

ONYX South Downs Limited are seeking a Pollution Prevention and Control permit from the Environment Agency. Essentially, ONYX have to prove to the Environment Agency that they are taking steps to minimise the amount of pollution their waste burner will emit before the Environment Agency grants them permission to build and operate it.

From DEFRA: "The aim of the Best Available Techniques is to prevent, and where that is not practicable, to reduce to acceptable levels, pollution to air, land and water from industrial activities". We at DOVE certainly believe it is practicable to prevent air pollution from a waste incinerator - that is not to build it in the first place, and employ practicable alternatives.

Our tireless Chairman has created a letter of objection (updated 29th Jan) to the PPC Application. As always, it is a highly detailed, well researched and credible document. A Word version is also available. Update 12th Feb: Chris has written a continuation letter (also Word version). Update 13th Feb: Chris has written a second continuation letter (also Word version).

As always, we encourage you to write your own letters if you wish to put forward your personal views as opposed to using our letter wizard. You can read a copy of a letter sent by Martine Davis, a teacher in Newhaven. We also have a letter sent by Janice Alderson, also of Newhaven.

The Environment Agency have a page on the Newhaven Incinerator.
